OVERVIEW

This itinerary takes you on an extraordinary trekking adventure through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences. Starting with a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, you will embark on a multi-day trek through remote Maasai villages, lush highlands, and volcanic craters, culminating in the challenging ascent of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, the sacred ‘Mountain of God.’ This journey provides a unique blend of adventure, nature, and cultural immersion, ending with a scenic drive back to Moshi.

Day 1: Arrival & Briefing

Day 2: Moshi to Ngorongoro Conservation Area / Nainokanoka Village

Depart from your hotel in the morning and travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you will enjoy a game drive in the crater. Afterward, ascend and drive to your camp, settling in for the night in preparation for your first trek.

Day 3: Nainokanoka to Bulati

Begin your trek from Nainokanoka with guides, cooks, and donkeys. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, zebras, and wildebeest, with jackals and eagles also present. The trek covers approximately 16 km in about 5 hours. Tonight, you will camp at an elevation of 2,650m.

Day 4: Bulati to Empakaai Crater

Trek to Empakaai, enjoying spectacular views of volcanic mountains including Kilimanjaro, Meru, Olmoti Crater, and Lolmasin. Empakaai Crater, with its soda lake, attracts bushbucks, buffalo, and blue monkeys. On a clear day, you can see Ol Doinyo L’Engai, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Lake Natron. At night, you may hear flamingos returning to their breeding grounds. Trekking time is 4–5 hours over 9 km. Tonight, you will camp at an elevation of 3,100m.

Day 5: Empakaai to Acacia Camp

Descend into the Empakaai Crater in the morning, following a well-maintained trail to the crater floor. The soda lake provides an essential food source for flamingos. The crater floor is also home to antelope and aquatic birds. After exploring, ascend back to the rim and continue your trek towards Acacia Camp as the landscape becomes drier and warmer. Trekking time is approximately 5 hours over 13 km. Tonight, you will camp at an elevation of 3,200m.

Day 6: Acacia Camp to Kamakia Camp

Descend towards the Rift Valley, enjoying breathtaking views of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, Lake Natron, and the surrounding volcanic landscape. The trek leads into a dry, ash-covered terrain from the 2007 eruption. Before lunch, you will reach the transfer vehicles for a short drive to the base of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, an active carbonite volcano. In the late afternoon, you have the option to hike to nearby waterfalls. Trekking time is about 5 hours over 6 km. Sleeping elevation is 2,600m

Day 7: Ol Doinyo L’Engai Volcano – Night Hike

Shortly after midnight, begin your ascent of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, the sacred ‘Mountain of God’ for the Maasai people. The trek is steep and challenging, requiring a high level of fitness. The climb ascends from 800m to 3,000m and can take 8–14 hours, with no shade along the way. Return to camp around 11:00 AM for brunch and an afternoon of rest. Trekking distance is 15 km. Tonight’s sleeping elevation is 2,600m.

Day 8: Lake Natron to Moshi

Depart in the morning for the drive back to Moshi, which will take most of the day.

Day 9: Departure

You will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight or continue your Tanzanian adventure with an extended itinerary.
