The Machame Route is approximately 62 km/ 37 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but plenty of first time trekker use the route as well and do just fine. It is rated as one of Kilimanjaro’s better routes and thus is recommended.

OVERVIEW
TOUR ITNERARY
After completing the necessary registration formalities at Machame gate, The climb begins from Machame gate (1800m) Montane forest zone, thick tree canopy and stratified into layer mostly fogy and misty permanently damp mulch due to heavy rain, High diversity of flora and fauna, evergreen vegetation, Posses thick soil and dead organic matter. Lunch on the half way, dinner and overnight At Machame hut
The morning work is a steep ascent up to Shira cave (3850m) with superb views of Kibo and Mt Meru. Damp area dominated by groundsel senecio , lobelia spp, tussock and common festuca. All the way to Shira rock and roll. Lunch at shira cave hut. Afternoon will be free to rest and explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at Shira cave.
Acclimatization day. A long but gentle steep toward Lava tower(4600m) At this day we trek higher to lava tower and we descent to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley(3930m) Hot lunch at Lava tower, After lunch we descent slowly to Barranco. Dinner and overnight at Barranco hut. 5-6hrs walking.
After breakfast, a steep climb up the Barranco wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of kibo with superb vista of the south ice fields. The terrain change to scree with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to Karanga Hut(400m)the last water point on the summit.(4-5hrs walking)
We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu base camp (4670m) for lunch. There is a short acclimatization walk to the plateau at the bottom of the south-east valley (4800m). The rest of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night (3-4hrs walking)
We will start our ascent by torchlight, so that we can be up on the crater rim by Sunshine. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella point (5735m) in about five to six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are feeling strong can make the two hours round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru peak (5896m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy mostly at the Summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment we continue to descent to reach our final campsite Millenium camp (3800m) 11-15hrs walk.
A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to the National park gate at Mweka (1650m) and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village (4-6hrs walking
